Causes of Back Pain

It is common for people to have similar back pain but in fact have very different back problems. You may or may not choose surgery to treat your chronic back pain. Physicians advocate trying non-surgical approaches first, of course. There are two broad causes of back pain. The first is a physical condition that has gone unidentified as the source of the pain. Chronic back pain is persistent and doesn't respond to standard kinds of pain relief. It could be because of a long ago injury that is no longer there, or it could be a result of a current condition like arthritis or nerve damage.

Acute back pain usually gets better without any treatment, but you may want to take acetaminophen, aspirin, or ibuprofen to help ease the pain. Exercise and surgery are not usually used to treat acute back pain. Acute refers to how long it has lasted for rather than how severe it is. If the problem goes on for longer, it's known as chronic back pain.

People over 60 years of age are grouped separately usually . They often have problems of arthritis and other degenerative conditions which can be the causes of back pain. A bump, bruise or an accident can be a cause of lower back pain.

Back pain relief is a matter of practicing good back health; just as you shower or bath every day to keep your skin healthy. Exercise is vital to keep the muscles of your spine supple and strong to enable them to perform their job - keeping you upright. Back pain relief is normally achieved after a day or two of this kind of rest. If the pain remains even after you have rested for two days already, see a doctor. Getting relief for lower back pain can be fast and easy, but relief varies from one person to the next. Chronic back pain is most likely described as a constant nagging irritation or a dull ache.

Spine

Abdominal and back muscles need to be specifically targeted with strengthening exercise in order to support the spine. Exercise and physical fitness are critical, including stretching and building strength in the core trunk muscles that help support the spine. Without question, the composition and function of the spine is a marvel of nature, providing us with a unique combination of structure to allow us to stand upright and move with precision.

Flexibility is needed, especially in the lower and upper spine, allowing us to bend and twist in a full variety of movements. Strength is provided by the bones, discs, joints and supportive muscles and connective tissue. Here are the basics of anatomical causes of spine pain. Neck Pain - the cervical spine (neck) supports the weight of your head and protects the nerves that come from your brain to the rest of the body.

Upper Back Pain The 12 vertebral bodies in the upper back that are attached to the rib cage make up the thoracic spine (middle or upper back) are firmly attached to the rib cage at each level, providing a great deal of stability and structural support, protecting the heart, lungs and other important organs within the chest. Because there is little motion in the upper spine, it is rare to have pain caused by a herniated or degenerated thoracic disc. Strong abdominal muscles and back muscles are important to provide support for this area of the spine and avoid injury.
